New bill would ban military slot machines

A bill in Congress seeks to eliminate military slot machines overseas that take in $130 million a year, mostly from soldiers. Army Warrant Officer Aaron Walsh was addicted to these slot machines. He commited suicide after many failed attempts to break this habit. The Defense Department uses slot machine revenues to pay a small portion of its morale, welfare and recreation programs.The bills sponsor,Rep. Lincoln Davis said, "If American men and women are willing to serve our country overseas we should not be dependent on them to pay for recreational activities they deserve, The risks are simply too high and too many to ask that of our soldiers."
 

All-nighters May Hurt Grades

A new report says that students who don't pull all-nighters have slightly higher GPA's than students who do. This study was conducted with 120 students at St. Lawrence University in northern New York. Students who do pull all nighters have an average GPA of 2.95 compared to students who don't who average a 3.2. The study, by assistant professor of psychology Pamela Thacher, is to be included in the January issue of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.
 

Duke Still Dominates

After a dominating victory over MIchigan the Duke Blue Devils continue on with their so far undefeated season. The next challenge for the team is Albany. This is the first meeting between the schools. Albany comes in with a 5-4 record and is hoping to upset the number 6 ranked team in the country. Senior DeMarcus Nelson is expected to make his 10oth career start.

 

Wake Forest Wins Soccer National Championship

On Sunday the Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 2-1 to bring home their first Soccer National Championship. Zack Schilawski snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 77th minute to help his team to victory. "It's unbelievable," said Schilawski, "Growing up here, I've seen a lot of great games on that field. It's a thrill just to be a part of a game like that, much less to win it. It was perfect."
 

West Virginia's Rodriguez takes Michigan Job

The head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers, Paul Rodriguez, has accepted the head coaching job at the University of Michigan. "I am thrilled to have Rich Rodriguez as Michigan's new coach, athletic director Bill Martin wrote in an e-mail. "Rich brings an exciting brand of football to Michigan Stadium. We welcome the entire Rodriguez family to Ann Arbor." Rodriguez will take over, after his final game as a Mountaineer, for Lloyd Carr who was the head coach for 13 years.
